Piracy And The App Store

I was thinking about the 30% cut Apple gets from applications. It seems like a lot but is probably less or the same than what PalmGear charges for Palm apps. Besides the fact that there are no hosting or credit card charges, how will it help to keep piracy down?

If you buy the application from the itunes store and there's no registrations to share, it should make it harder to pirate. What would stop some one from copying an application from one iPhone to another? Does the application become hard coded to the phone?

Follow Up: iHome Review

Back in 2005 I bought a iHome (now called a iH8 model). It was the first real ipod compatible alarm clock radio. After a little over 2 years of usage, I think I can give a verdict: Don't buy one.

First problem is the often complained about back light. It's bright even at the lowest settings. The entire screen is backlight instead of just the numbers. Second problem is the somewhat confusing button layout. Including the buttons on the very back related to setting the time. Finally the fact the the thing breaks over time is the main reason I cannot recommend it.

My iHome's back light stopped working over 6 months ago. I could live with that. About a month ago all the buttons stopped working. I cannot control a ipod, though at least it still charges one. My one data point doesn't do it alone. A little over a year ago a friend bought one. It too has also no longer is able to control a iPod, although it is still able to charge it.

That's two data points, enough for me to say the makers of the iHome have a quality control issue. I'm looking forward to purchasing the Sony XDR-S10HDiP HD Radio with iPod dock this summer.

My Palm TX and iPod Photo Are Dead To Me

My Palm TX and my iPod Photo are dead to me. literally. I think the batteries in both of them no longer hold a charge.

It started with my Palm TX about a month ago. One minute it would work and the next it wouldn't despite the battery showing a full charge before. Charging via USB wasn't helping it, I hooked it up to the wall wart charger which allowed it to operate for a few minutes.

My iPod Photo only lasts about 30 minutes on a charge. The battery indicator will indicate that it's mostly fully before it dies. Last year it would go a whole 8 hours.

I'm a person who lives off his PDA. Being without it for the last month has left me lost and naked. I'm not adjusting to life without it very well. I never listened to the radio with thanks to my iPod. Now I'm having to adjust to life without either. 16GB iPhone: where are you?

iTunes 7.3: The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred (-50)

iTunes 7.3.1 is suppose to fix this issue.

iTunes 7.3: The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred (-50)
I would not recommend downloading iTunes 7.3 unless you absolutely need to. I was greeted to this error: "The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred (-50)" after iTunes attempts to upgrade the library. It seems every version of iTunes has some problem or another after install, but this is the first time I've had some such error.

Apple's message board indicates that many people on Mac OS X and Windows are having the problem. I see a few people who have a large library and have the library on a external hard drive as I do, but it's not clear that this is the cause. What seems to be the cause is some sort of permissions issue. Possibly. Hopefully Apple gets this one fixed soon.

Update 07/01/07 10:54 AM: There's suggestions to use this Apple tech note to recreate your library. The only problem with this tech note is it will delete any customizations in the library, like ratings and playcounts. I'm going to revert my install to iTunes 7.2 until Apple comes out a fix.

Update 07/02/07 12:29 PM: MaxFixIt is covering the iTunes error now. They have several suggestions including checking for iTunes add ons, Disabling APE for iTunes and restarting in safe mode. I tired all the suggestions and none of them worked. I'm going to play with Tiger Cache Cleaner and see if it will clean up anything.

Update 08/02/07 5:55 PM: Fixed! I removed most of my podcasts, most of them were video podcasts. Once of them must have been screwed up in the iTunes database.

Update 07/06/07 3:49 PM: I re subscribed to some of the podcasts, video and audio, since deleting them all. So far there's been no problem with any of them. They are syncing with my AppleTV and my iPod. I didn't add them all though. There maybe some that I didn't add that maybe causing the problem.

If you don't like the idea of deleting all of your podcasts, try deleting a few at a time. Starting with the video podcasts. Be sure you delete the whole podcast, not just the individual episodes.

The older version of apple software update cannot be removed

The older version of apple software update cannot be removed
I get this error when trying to install any Apple application on my Windows XP machine at work: "The older version of apple software update cannot be removed". Apple's Software Update program will not auto update itself and iTunes will not uninstall.

The solution is to download the Windows Install Cleanup program from Microsoft. I had to remove Apple Software Update, Itunes and Quicktime. Since I don't use iTunes on my Windows machine, I didn't worry about backing it up. But if i did use it, would have backed it up.

I went back and reinstalled all the Apple programs without any problems

Apple iTunesApparently, Maroon 5 is doing well. And so is iTunes

iPhone I Ache For You

Oh my little iPhone, in some Chinese factory out there. Your probably nothing more than little bits of plastic and toxic chemicals right now. Come June, you will be in my hand and I will make sweet, sweet love to you.... What? Why are you looking at me like that?

Your thinking the same thing, I know it.

I'm going to be throwing away my Palm TX. Palm had their chance, but they blew it. I'm glad I never bought their stocks.

My Motorola RAZR, It too is going in the garbage. It's so sexy on the out side, but much like many a sexy model, it's a asshole inside. I hate it more and more every day.

I'm going to have to switch from T-Mobil to Cingular. All I can think is, why can't AT&T just die already. They wont and I get almost no signal from T-Mobil, so I guess it's time to switch.

Going from a 60GB iPod to a 8GB iPhone, that could be an issue.

Apple iPhone In January

From MacRumors, Kevin Rose says the Apple iPhone will be out in January.
  • Going to be coming out in January
  • All phone providers
  • "It's small as sh*t"
  • Don't know anything about the Operating System
  • The OS is supposed to be "cool"
  • Doing some unique things
  • Two batteries, one charger. One for MP3 portion and one for Phone.
  • 4GB ($249) and 8GB ($449)
  • Flash memory, Slide out keyboard
  • Maybe touch screen?

I think it will be called the iPod Phone (like iPod Nano, etc) and I will buy one.

Engineering iTunes Playlists

I primarily listen to my music collection through my iPod. I don't care what Apple says, the shuffle feature of the iPod (and to a lesser degree iTunes) does a poor job of preventing the same Artist from playing randomly. Even with the the scheme I came up wit here, my iPod still played 3 songs from Metallica in a row the other day. These methods do a good job of addressing the issues.

iTunesScreenSnapz001I start off with master playlist called "Filtered", it's filtered for genres. Second playlist is "Filtered - 4 Stars + Played". This ensures that songs which are rated have actually been played. I ofter will rate new songs high but not really listed to them (I have another playlist for new songs). The next playlist is "Filtered - 4 Stars + Played last 14 days." Finally I'm to my primary playlist, "Filtered - 4 Stars + w/o last 14 days."

Unfortunately the iPod does not automatically update these playlists, they only get updated when I sync my iPod with iTunes. At one time "The Stroke" had 2x as many plays as any other song, I like that song but not that much, this does a reasonably good job of reducing this effect. I'd prefer to have a playlist that removes, say the top 10% of played songs, but iTunes doesn't have this option in the filter lists. This also doesn't prevent the same artist being played in a row.

iPhone & Cingular

Think Secret says:

Apple and Cingular have signed an agreement that will make the US' largest cell phone provider the exclusive carrier of Apple's forthcoming phone, sources report. Apple's iPhone remains on track for an early 2007 release.

Apple's exclusive contract with Cingular is said to be good for the first six months, sources report, meaning other providers will be able to sell the phone in the second-half of 2007. Cingular had an exclusive on the Motorola ROKR—the first phone to feature iTunes—when it launched last year.

If this is true I might be willing to switch, but I'm not going to buy a crippled phone like what Cingular does to the Motorola phones. If Apple designs the phone like Motorola, then hopefully it has a sim card and I can use it with T-Mobile. In which case I will wait patiently and buy a unlocked version off ebay.

In either case I really hate this Motorola SLVR that I bought. I should have stuck with Sony Ericsson.

So Long Dell

Several iLoungers note that Dell%u2019s last remaining digital music player, the DJ Ditty, has quietly disappeared from the company%u2019s online store. The DJ Ditty, a flash memory-based player that competed with the iPod shuffle, was the last player offered by Dell after the company discontinued its hard drive-based line of DJ players in February. Dell%u2019s DJ Life website currently links to error pages for ordering, and the company%u2019s online store now only sells media players from Sandisk, Samsung, Creative, Archos, and iRiver. Members of Dell%u2019s message boards also note that the Ditty is no longer to be found in the company%u2019s monthly catalog and that the player was briefly available at a discounted price earlier this month.

Inelegant Mess

An Apple exec talks about iPod integration in cars, and why Apple wants integration instead of add on stuff.

Borchers explained how Apple wants to steer consumers away from the inelegant mess of cassette adaptors and wires, which is currently the most popular way to rig an iPod into your car stereo. Apple itself has no interest in producing a car stereo, says Borchers, but is working with third parties to improve iPod integration in new cars.

I have such an inelegant mess, a Griffin iPod Cassette Adapter (with an dock connector instead of a mini plug). I looked at new stereos with iPod integration, I wasn't that impressed.

Not only could I not find one with a bluetooth interface (that was only a few hundred dollars) but the interfaces suck too. I think I will hold off for a while until something really good comes out.

Kevin Rose Knows

Former TechTV nerd says he knows exactly what Apple will announce on Wednesday.

New Products:- Cingular will announce an iTunes compatible phone - the "Rocker"- New 2GB ipod called the "Nano" - it will sport a color screen and will be much smaller and thinner than a mini. Price = $199

No video ipod.. You heard it here first.

CD Ripping Services

I suppose for some people it a good value to have someone rip your CD's for you.

So is all that a good deal? For most people, I don't think it is. Riptopia, for example, charges $200 to rip a collection of 200 CDs. A collection of 400 discs will run you about $400. Most of the other services I've seen charge similar rates. Whether that's a good value depends on the size of your music collection and how long it takes to rip a CD.

I looked into doing this. I checked with the owner of the service (don't recall which one) and he basically licensee the name and gets a cut of the profits. I would select the area code that I want to service and he sends all business of that area code my way.

I wanted to know a basic idea how much business I could expect, before I sign up. I don't think a prospectus is too much to ask. He couldn't bother to send me that information, I suspect he had no idea. So I never signed up, I didn't want to get in over my head with too much business and I didn't have a good idea of how much profit I would make.

Best iTunes Tip. EVAR!

How many times have I wanted to delete a song in playlist and got annoyed about having to go to the library to find it? Lots! Now I've learned that I don't have too.

iTunes has a keyboard shortcut that lets you delete any song from your library, even if you're inside another playlist. Just hold down the Option key while you hit the Delete key (Option-Delete) for any song in any playlist. When you do so, iTunes will delete the song from your entire library.

I Gots Me A iH5

Enough talking about it people! I went out and bought me a iH5 from Target today. They have it on sale for $109.00, which is more than the $99 list price online. But I probably would have paid the difference in shipping and I get instant gratification!

I guess the most important thing is how good of a alarm clock is it? It has everything I want in a alarm clock, it goes off at a specific time that I program it too. It also has the "gentle wake" system where it slowly ramps up the volume. The thing I might miss is the multiple alarms, but it's easy enough to set that I can live without it.

This is replacing my Zenith alarm clock. I realize that this is the oldest piece of technology I have, I think I got it when I was a teenager. It still works perfectly after all these years. But it has no iPod dock, so out the door it goes.

iLounge Reviews The iHome iH5

iLounge has a review of the iHome (warning: flash) iH5 clock radio with iPod support that I was pretty excited about. They were pretty impressed with it.

if you%u2019re planning looking for a better iPod-specific clock radio alternative today, you won%u2019t find it. iH5 is the first of its breed, and quite close to the best implementation we could imagine for the price. There%u2019s room for improvement, but not much - the mark of our highly recommended, A- rating.

The sound quality is good, it's no Bose but it's only $99. It's also missing the remote with which was originally announced, looks like you have to buy it separately. This is on my shopping list for sure.

Still No iTunes Phone

Everyone expected the iTunes phone to be released today, but it looks like Apple isn't going to play.

In the first five minutes of the event, Motorola%u2019s Ed Zander read a statement from Apple stating that the iTunes phones will not be unveiled today, but instead will be unveiled at a separate music event within the next 66 days, and shipped this quarter. %u201CWe%u2019re not going to launch the iTunes photo today,%u201D the statement read. %u201CSteve is not going to jump out of a cake.%u201D

66 days? What the heck does that mean? But I would like to see Steve Jobs jump out of a cake! Hey, at least Engadget has this picture.

My Next Alarm Clock

Alarm clocks are a very personal thing. Once you get one that does what you expect, you don't want to just swap it out without something that will work as you expect. I've been searching for years for a new clock and not finding anything worthy.

iPodLounge shows off iH5 alarm clock radio with a iPod dock and integration.

The iH5 also features %u201CGentle Wake and Gentle Sleep,%u201D which %u201Cgradually increases and decreases Alarm/Sleep volume for a more relaxing beginning and end to each day,%u201D and utilizes Reason8 speaker technology to create "sound quality that has outstanding depth, clarity and power." The iH5 works with the 3G/4G iPod, iPod mini and iPod photo. iPodlounge was told the iH5 will be available in August for $99.99, and that a website for the product will go live later this week.

It's has the functions of my exsiting alarm clock plus more! Won't be out till August, I hate when I have to wait.

Podcast Support In Next Version of iTunes

PodCasting could be a feature of the next version of iTunes.

At the Wall Street Journal's D Conference, Steve Jobs tonight showed ipodder-like features in the next release of iTunes, supposedly available within about 60 days.

This is great news. I kind of gave up on podcasting bucause I found the software too much of a pain to use. Having it built right into iTunes would make it a lot easier.

If you don't know what podcasting is, its sort of a way to listen to radio station on your ipod. It's obviously not live but a recording.

More on the Camera Connector

AppleInsider has a sneak peak of what appears to be the camera connector. Not much to it, really.

New iPods

Apple released new iPods today. There weren't any color iPod minis this time around as predicted. They did however alter the coloring of the mini's, they are a little more brighter than before and they eliminated the gold min. Guess it wasn't that well of a seller. The 4GB mini is now at that magic price of $199, and they introduced a 6GB version for $249. They also say the battery life hits 18 hours.

The iPod photo 60 that I bought for $599 is now $449. Yikes! You would think they could at least wait 6 months (welcome to the world of a New Early Adopter). They took out the firewire cable and black belt clip, still not $150 worth of stuff though.

More significantly they finally announced a "iPod Camera Connector" accessory. It will hook up directly to your digital camera. It's about time, I specifically bought this iPod photo for this reason. Now that iPhoto 5 supports RAW format images my 1GB CF card doesn't hold nearly enough photos.

It's Stupid to Buy an iPod

"it's stupid to buy an iPod" is what Napster CEO Chris Gorog is hoping to convince people in this Forbes article. His logic about the current Napster being like a P2P system is kind of bizarre becasue it itn't anything like that, but whatever. He also seems to think that they can convince people in droves that the subscription model is better. Notice however, that no where do you hear that if you cancel your subscription, your music fails to play anymore. You are forever stuck to whatever service you bought the music with, I like iTunes better. If iTunes goes under, I can still play the music.

Plus, has the new Napster ever made any money from selling music

Lego & iPod Ads Mix

You know that the influence of something is big when it starts to be expressed in lego form.

What is PodBrix?

Tomi Responds:

PodBrix sells modified minifigs inspired by the popular ad campaign for portable music players. In the future we may branch out to other related minifigs.

How are the PodBrix minifigs created?

Tomi Responds:

I start with a Lego brand minifig and modify it by hand to create the desired appearance. Each one is slightly different.

I see only one minifig available for sale on the site. Are there others?

Tomi Responds:

At this time I am producing a limited edition run (300 units) of the "1K Brix" minifig. Lego minifigs are hard to come by in large quantities and I don't want to commit to more at this time. When the "1K Brix" have sold out, I will design another different figure. Join the mailing list to be updated when we release a new product.

Another Pepsi/iTunes Promo

This is the sort of thing that drives me to drink soda again. Dam them.

Starting at midnight on January 31, consumers will be able to look for codes under the caps of specially-marked 20-oz. and 1-liter bottles of Pepsi products for alphanumeric codes and a "Free song" message, which provides one free song download from the iTunes Music Store. After redeeming your free song code, you will automatically be credited with one entry in the iPod mini sweepstakes, which will give away one iPod mini every hour (24 a day) from February 2 to April 11, with one final drawing on May 2. Apple said it will be giving away approximately 1,700 iPod minis--all of which will be silver with an engraved Pepsi logo on the back.

Free Music From the iTunes Music Store

If you bought a new iPod you can get some (13 songs) free from the iTunes Music Store. If you already have an iPod, your SOL. Well maybe not. You can download the same free music by clicking this link. You see, apparently iTunes can tell when you have a virgin iPod so it will take you to this page automatically.

Remember, just because it's free doesn't make it good.

Note: If you want to get the link for yourself, get if from the ITMS. I'm using my affiliate link to the album.

iPod Photo

Dam you Apple, dam you all to hell!!!! Why must you separate me from my money? At this rate my credit card will never get paid off.

1-2 weeks to ship is just to long. Why must you torture me in so many ways?

[Update:] It shipped on Oct 27th from Shanghai. It now shows that it arrived in Albuquerque tonight (Oct 29th). Guess I have to wait till Monday.

Buy the Apple 40 GB iPod Photo or Apple 60 GB iPod Photo from Amazon.

Super iPod Rumors Resurface

Think Secret sez that there will be a color, photo/movie playing ipod and it will be here in 30 to 60 days!
The new iPod's form factor will be identical to the existing 4G iPods, sources report, but will be two millimeters thicker than the current 40GB iPod and marginally heavier. The 2-inch color screen is identical in size to other iPods, but will sport a higher resolution for photo viewing. However, the new device's real shining feature will be its video-out port, which will enable users to tote their photo galleries with them, ready to be plugged into any television for big-screen viewing.

There's no doubt that I will be the first to pre order one although I hadn't planned to spend the ~$500 that it's rumored to cost. As for the lack of media card support I suspect that it will use some sort USB interface to work with the camera. If they are successful with this version future versions would include media card readers, or so speculates me.

More Microsoft FUD

Dairingfireball is covering MSN's whining about the iPod not supporting WMA files. Their first FAQ on the subject was really bad and has since been shortened with less whining.
First, the Windows Media format is described as ?popular?, but Apple?s ?own format? (apparently AAC/FairPlay is that-which-shall-not-be-named in Redmond) is a ?proprietary DRM? format. The truth is that all three words ? popular, proprietary, and DRM ? apply to both formats. But the only one they choose for themselves ? ?popular? ? is the least apt for Windows Media, given that Apple?s AAC/FairPlay has 70 percent market share.

I know it's hard to believe that Microsoft would resort to such thing

|

I'm a Little Surpised at Microsoft

That they would stoop to this level.
Microsoft is using playlists from more than 900 local radio stations around the country to create its own soundalike Internet stations -- stripped of local DJ chatter, traffic, weather and commercials.

"I'm surprised they would co-opt the brand names of every radio station in America without permission,'' said Bill Conway, program director and station manager for San Francisco's KOIT-FM. Conway was surprised when he learned from a reporter that Microsoft was using his station's call letters and well-known slogan, "Lite Rock, Less Talk,'' to promote a mimicked version of KOIT.

Not that it matters to me. I'm perfectly happy with iTunes radio stations.

What Could Have Been

This has got to be one of those "DOH!" moments, "PortalPlayer [Who made the iPod for Apple] was working with AIWA, a subsidiary of SONY," the source said by IM. "AIWA was so close to finishing the product but SONY killed it. I saw the prototype. It was one of the coolest MP3 players I have ever seen."..."The executives at SONY regret that decision, so since last fall SONY has more than half dozen products that would compete with iPod including some players from AIWA."... "I also know another American company who was making hard disk + FireWire MP3 player but didn't make it because the reference hardware was held at customs in Singapore for a couple of months... before the iPod came out."

This is the sort of things they fire people for. Now they are saying that Apple could become the "Microsoft of music". I hope not. It's one thing to dominate but to be the "Microsoft" implies using heavy handed tactics and borderline legal/illegal strategies to wipeout competition. Hopefully Apple simply competes and has the best product.

Moto & iTunes

"Apple Computer Inc. will make a slimmed-down version of its iTunes jukebox software that No. 2 cell phone maker Motorola Inc. will install on some wireless phones it will start selling in the first half of 2005, the companies said on Monday."

Wow, and I thought iTunes was a way to sell iPods. Clearly this shows that Apple thinks there's a chance to make some extra dough via the iTunes Music Store. This should help Motorola sell phones. If you have a ton of iTunes music would you buy a phone that plays your iTunes songs vs one that can't. I wonder if that sexy new V3 will be capable?

Oh yeah, lets see how long Harmony lasts before Apple Legal beats them down.

[Updated:] Speaking of the V3, there is a good review of it here. It is on my gadget want list!

Lets Try to Think of Something New

We went to see Anchorman this weekend. Incredibly hilarious and kind of stupid. Overall a terrific movie. While looking at the posters I came across Shark Tale. DreamWorks who came out with Antz, while Pixar came out with A Bugs Life, is responsible for this underwater fish related computer generated movie. Computer generated, in the ocean, with fish; that's so 2003.

It does Sound familiar, "There are some predictable character types (vegitarian shark) that will make you think of Finding Nemo, but still enticing enough to make you want to see it." Also they are going to release it at the same time as The Incredibles. Dreamworks has made some really great movies. Shrek was a really successful original CG film, that's what they should stick to: originality.

Double negative points to DreamWorks for their over-flashed site and not being able to directly link to anything.

I forgot to mention that I am a Pixar stock holder

Speaking of iPods, Sony...

Since the new iPod has made a big splash today (and it's not even a major update) why not give some competing technology a chance.

What's the point of the Sony Network Walkman? What's the point of putting 'Network' in the name? It only plays Sony's proprietary ATRAC3 files. If you got MP3's you have to convert them to ATRAC3. And to add insult to injury ATRAC3 is inferior to just about everything. As Engadget puts it, "Want to be the first one you know to buy Sony?s new NW-HD1 Network Walkman and also the first to experience buyer?s remorse?" You should have remorse as your buying it if you pay $569 for it. At least it's a tiny thing.

The iPod Is Out Of The Bag (updated)

Newsweek magazines next cover is out with a picture Steve Jobs and what is suppose to be the next iPod. Last time something like this happened it was Time magazine and the photo of the next (or current, or I guess now the late) iMac.

If this is a mistake, a leak at the magazine then I suspect this is the last time Newsweek will take a picture of Steve Jobs. Perhaps MSNBC is trying to sabotage Apple because they are controlled by Microsoft.

I think however that this is all planned. There have been very little rumors on the release, other than it was coming. Those rumors placed the release tword the end of August (now suspected to the for the iPod Mini). Apple loves the hype of a new product. It helps them and they know it. I'm sure they have orchestrated this so called leak. The fact the the cover still remains available is a good sign of that. Also note that the picture doesn't show much interesting or the article doesn't give any specs. So really all this is doing is telling us that a new iPod will be released tomorrow.

[Update:] I was wrong, here is the article with the specs.

[Update 2:] MacRumors suggest a color iPod is still in the works for the August/September time frame. And that is just a bizarre picture of Steve Jobs.

[Update 3:] Looks like there will be no 60GB version for a while. I'm trying to figure out if this is a compelling enough product to purchase. It bums me out that the 20GB version does not have a remote or dock but the 40GB does. It doesn't have any of the video options I was hoping either. I won't buy anything until I get the 20" display paid for.

Sore Looser

Kevin Britten, you are a bastard. I spent $40 worth of my hard earned cash buying songs from the iTunes music store at 11:24 PM MST Sunday night only to have miscalculated and (probably) bought the songs after the 100 millionth. You got a fancy new PowerBook, a fancy new iPod and 10,000 fancy new 99 cents songs and apparently a call from the Major Commander of the Mothership. With a song that I never would have bought where as my list consisted of Styx, The Police, Tears For Fears and a modern Liz Phair to name a few (let the mocking begin).

I on the other hand I probably won't even make the cut for the "special" 20gig iPods.

Easy Music Download Scam

I recently helped a friend with a problem. I will call that friend Bob. Bob was looking for a song that was made sometimes in the 80's, he couldn't find it in the stores so he decided to go online. Bob had heard about the lawsuits against file traders and wasn't to steer away from those p2p programs, even though he didn't know exactly what they are. Bob did want to buy the music, not get it for free anyways. Bob has zero experience buying music on the internet and Bob didn't talk to me first.

So where did Bob go? Google of course. Bob somehow came across a site called EasyMusicDownload (I'm not giving them the credit of a direct link you can figure out how to find them if your really interested). The site appears to be a place where you can download music. They even have a search function and when Bob typed in every obscure song he though of it came up in a list with links. You click on a link, it takes you to a sign up page. For $21 a year you can download all the music you want. This is where the scam begins. They don't offer a music download service, they offer "technical support" for p2p software that can be downloaded elsewhere for free . Of course you don't realize this till after you have paid their fee.

A search on google for easymusicdownload scam brings up a lot of unhappy people who also fell for the trap and the NY Times has a good article on these scams sites. Looks like there are several sites like this that. Just remember, if it's too good to be true it probably is.

iPod, iPod, iPod

Steve jobs has spoken about the future of the iPod. There is an article by David Pogue from January '04 and one more recent with Walt Mossberg in which he talks about the future of the iPod.

Per Steve Jobs: there will not be an video iPod because no one wants to watch a video on a little screen. I largely agree with that. There also a lot of difference between how the RIAA works and how the MPAA works in distributions, you can get your movies a half dozen different ways. Music has really only had 2 ways, radio and CDs. The iPod and ITMS are just adding a badly needed distribution method whereas there's not much demand for that on the movie size. OK, I can agree with all of that.

It looks like the iPod is Apple's PDA, which is disappointing. Though I wasn't really ever expecting a real PDA (I'd sure like to get my hands on the prototype). Steve says that 90% of the people who do use them only use them for getting information out them and not putting it in. I guess I'm part of the minority because I use mine for data input as much as anything else. He also says that the cell phone and PDA are going to merge, and they already are doing that. But they have a ways to go before I'm interested in such a device.

One thing he didn't talk about is what is shaping up to be the next trend for the iPod: Pirate Radio. There's a hack for the Griffin iTrip to add an amplified antenna so you can broadcast your tunes at a much farther distance (against FCC rules of course). Now they just need to add a microphone to the iTrip and you have your own mobile radio station.

I'm looking forward to the next version, this 5GB is getting old.

Creative's not so creative iPod rip-off

Creative Labs has announced a new hard drive based music player called the Zen Touch. Guess what it looks like? According to reviews it has great battery life, but I wonder how many cycles those batteries can take before the "wear out". Battery life alone is probably not going to dethrone the iPod. It's become a almost fashion statement. "Zen Touch" seems like a dumb name, but then so does "iPod".

The Video iPod

According to AppleInsider, Apple is indeed working on a video iPod. It doesn't sound like what everyone expects and it doesn't sound like it functions like the current offerings. "It works a bit like the ... voice recording feature," the source said. "When a user connects one end of the video-cable into the iPod's new dock connector and the other end into the TV, it will switch the iPod into video mode."

It will have a improved dock connector that hooks to your TV. The point will be to play video on the TV, not on the iPod screen. Apple has put a lot of design work into this (it it's true, which I believe it is) and it sounds like they will have another winner. I wouldn't want to play video on my iPod. I tried playing video on my Palm but it was painful to get the video converted and transfered so I gave up on it pretty quickly. Apple will no doubt have a easy solution for transferring video to/from the iPod and make it easy to play on a bigger screen.

I've been holding off on buying a new iPod to replace my 5GB (1st gen iPod) because the only new features they have is larger drive capacities. If Apple does indeed come out with this 4th generation iPod with the features they describe I will buy one. I would definitely make use of photo and move playback in the way they describe. It's a lot easier to plug a iPod into the TV than to drag out the computer. Hopefully it will include memory card slots too. If not maybe they will find a way to hook the camera directly to the iPod via a USB cable.

iTunes 4.5

On the 1 year anniversary of the iTunes Music Store, Apple has released iTunes 4.5 with new features.

Some of the interesting features are:

  • iMix - A feature that lets you share your playlists, or "mixes" with the world. You can see Steve's Jobs favorites. I wonder if he really did pick them.
  • Print CD Covers - Which is a cool feature that lets you print album covers in a collage format for custom CDs.
  • Import WMA files - This is Apple's answer to those that complain that iTunes won't play Windows Media Audio files. Basicly they won't let you play WMA files but they will let you convert them to Apple's format. A good way to lock people into iTunes.

You can also view music videos and movies trailers right from within iTunes. Looks like iTunes is becoming more of a media player then just a MP3 playing application.

Hell Has Frozen Over, Twice

What more is there to say? "HP and Apple today announced a strategic alliance to deliver an HP-branded digital music player based on Apple's iPod." So HP is going to rebrand the iPod and bundle iTunes on their PCs. I can see Microsoft holding their breath and jumping up and down.

[Update:] From Apple Turns, "[Microsoft said] "Windows is all about choice... we believe you should have the same choice when it comes to music services." Translation: "Use any service you want as long as it sells Windows Media, buy any player out there as long as it plays Windows Media-- but for heaven's sake, don't buy one of those wretched iPod thingies or we'll be completely boned with our whole plan to monopolize digital media commerce and then we might actually have to start innovating for our paychecks for a change." Or, to put it a little more succinctly, "you can have any color you want, as long as it's black."

Sony iPod Killer

Looks like the iPod killer will be release soon, and it's not the PSP. This is far more interesting than the PSP in my opinion because it has a similar form factor to the iPod, works kind of the same, and has the specific functions of the iPod (AFAICT) with the video stuff added. "Measuring 84mm x 120mm and weighing 300g, the PCVA-HVP20 comes with a 20GB hard disk. It supports USB2 and features AV out, 4hr battery life, 3.5 inch TFT, AVI, MPEG 2 and 4 , WMV-compatible. The release date is Nov 22, 2003 in Japan. The price is still uncomfirmed."

Here is the Sony Japanese Page on the unit. I expect the price to be close to the iPod. The iPod is already a lot so I cannot imagine that it will cost a whole lot more. Let's see if Apple will respond to this or just stick with the current design forever...

Apple 2003 Analyst Meeting

MacRumors has a good recap of the Apple 2003 Analyst Meeting Quicktime. I liked this quote the best:

Q: "Any plans to support or license WMA going forward?"
Jobs: "We decided to support an open audio codec [AAC] standard rather than a proprietary one." .... "That's our plan and we're sticking to it. We're feeling real good about it too".

BuyMusic.com Defrauding Artists?

Looks like BuyMusic is could be having more issues according to this story at MacSlash, "Here's what I've deduced... BuyMusic.com (which I will refer to as BM) got their "vast" music library of 300,000 plus songs from a company called the Orchard. The Orchard is a distribution company that has consistently shafted artists by not paying them for CD's sold nor returning unsold CD's or cancelling contracts. So, without the express consent of what is likely lots of the Orchards catalog, BM has put it up for sale at the bargain price of $.79 a song."

With all the latest hubbub on digital music, I am introducing the weekly poll. Do you use digital music?

BuyMusic vs. The iTunes Music Store

After reading a few reviews of the BuyMusic store I had to check it out for myself. BuyMusic makes no attempt to be Mac compatible. And probably best so, because it sucks in comparison to what Apple offers. And when Apple comes out with the iTunes music store for Windows it will probably die for this reason.

First thing I noticed was how much similar it looked to the iTunes interface. Uglier since they tried to cram it into a web page, but similar. Second thing was the commercials that they show at the bottom of the page. These are in Windows Media Format so dont even bother trying to view them. Just know that they also look like the Apple Music commercials. And thirdly I was struck by the "How to" videos at the bottom of the page. Apple has no such video on their site. Its not needed. the iTunes Music Store is so obvious on how to work that no instruction is needed. By the way, the Quicktime AAC audio codec (the file format that you download songs from the ITMS) has been named the best AAC codec.

Windows Users: Why is this so hard for you? Why do you continue to be abused by this substandard software that is designed to increase Microsoft's market share (that is what MS is all about, market share. Not technology, not user experience but market share)? Well, I guess that is the reason. You have been sucked up into Microsoft's money vacuum and will walk off a cliff like a bunch of lemmings. Sorry you don't know any better...

Some Stuff I Missed

I've been out of town for a few days and here is some stuff I've missed:

Santa Fe opens the 2nd Ethanol fuel station in the state. Good news if you have a Ethanol powered car.
We finally got some rain thanks to hurricane Claudette.
The Solar Powered Car race continues, they were in Albuquerque this weekend.
Buy.com is trying to take out Apple's iTunes Music Store on the Windows side. Doesn't look like it's as good.
That Russian guy is not going to get married in the ISS. Bummer, why are the governments trying to stop the cool stuff from happening in space?

People And Their iPods

I think this sums it up for some people. Not me though (I do like my iPod, thats as far as it goes).
