Tesla In New Mexico... Not Anymore
Tesla issued a press release in February of 2007 stating that they will build their WhiteStar sedan in New Mexico.
Governor Richardson announced today that Tesla Motors will build a new automobile assembly facility in Albuquerque, bringing 400 high wage jobs and a total capital investment of $35 million. Construction on the 150,000 square foot plant will begin in April 2007, at the latest.
It’s the end of June 2008 and no electric car plants have been built. The state of California screwed New Mexico out of that opportunity.
Ze’ev Drori, CEO of Tesla Motors, and Governor Schwarzenegger announced today at a press conference at Tesla Motors headquarters that Tesla’s next product, a 4-door, 5-passenger sedan, will be manufactured at a facility in the state of California.
Previously it had been announced that the sedan manufacturing facility was planned for Albuquerque, New Mexico. After a thorough review of the program, Tesla decided that it would be highly advantageous to build manufacturing facilities in close proximity to the engineering and research and development functions in Tesla’s San Carlos headquarters. Tesla’s battery pack, a critical component of the Tesla Roadster, is currently manufactured in California. Final assembly of the Tesla Roadster is also currently in California.
That really sucks.
Barack Obama In Albuquerque
Barack Obama was in Albuquerque today. Of course I wasn’t invited but nmfbihop.com has a nice write up with lots of pictures.
AT&T's 3G Coverage In Albuquerque

Local Camerman Gets Arrested
Albuquerque only seems to get national attention when something bad happens. This time the local NBC affiliate KOB channel 4 had a cameraman who was arrested by a police. The “raw video” shows the cop gets into a scuffle with the cameraman while the cop tries to arrest the cameraman.
There’s something missing from this video, like what lead up to this indicent. KOB’s story only says:
The photographer says he was asked to leave the scene and go to a media staging area. However, he says officers did not tell him where that area was located.
I bet there’s more to it than that. The cops probably told the cameraman mutiple times what to do any he probably continued to mouth off to them and ignore their instruction. I’ve never heard of this sort of thing happening in Albuquerque before and I doubt the police officer just walked up to him decided to arrest him becasue he asked for his badge number.
My opinion of KOB is they like to sensationalize the news and this seems to be leading in this direction.
Update 6/12/08: Guess the cops did make a mistake.
The Chief of Police Ray Schultz has viewed a videotape of the confrontation and concluded that several mistakes were made during the confrontation.
Knockouts: Haircuts For Men
Knockouts has a website and a MySpace page. I also think they give haircuts.
They just opened a shop in Albuquerque, conveniently really close to Hooters and next to Jason's Deli. It looks like they have some nick packages... I mean services... I mean haircuts and massages... oh never mind. I still can't figure out what their prices are. Probably more than I am willing to pay.
Govenor Doesn't Like Red Light Cameras, Still Wants The Cash
Gov. Bill Richardson chimed in Friday on the fight for red light camera revenue between the city of Albuquerque and the state. Comparing the program to “big-brother,” Richardson said he is leaning toward signing a bill that would claim camera revenue for the state. What? If he doesn't like them then introduce a bill to ban them.
Red Light Cameras: It's All About The Money
I can't help be be amused that the Mayor of Albuquerque has suspended the red light camera program over money. According to him, the purpose of the program was not to make money, but was to increase safety at risky intersections. Its questionable if the data supports this, but the program did make money, like $10 million. Oops, that extra $10 million wasn't supposed to happen. Or was it?
Now the state wants a cut of it, or I guess all of it, so goodbye cash cow. I'm sure all interested parties will find a way so everyone can profit. except the citizens.
Best Comment Of The Day
There's a giant sink hole on Paseo Del Norte, a major artery through the west side of Albuquerque and Rio Rancho. The following comment was posted on the KOBTV's article on the road closure.
Well, those crews had better get busy! I need to use that road to get to TD's every day for my daily fix of skin and wiggles!
TD's is a strip club in Albuquerque.
First Snow Of Winter In Rio Rancho & Albuquerque
It was in the high 70's earlier this week. Now it's snowing. Only in New Mexico.
I didn't have my camera with me tonight so I borrowed this creative commons licensed photo from flickr.
[Update 11/23/07 2:34PM]: I've replaced the original photo with one of my own backyard.
What Was The Suspicious Device At A Albuquerque Train Station?
A suspicious device was found at a Rail Runner train stop in Albuquerque.
Bernalillo County Sheriff's Lt. Duncan Sanchez said the device consisted of two white cylinders attached to a base with protruding wires. The Albuquerque police bomb squad used a robot to disable the device... Authorities declined to say what the device was.
Uh... yeah, I would call that suspicious. It was plugged into a outlet at the train station. Does this mean that power outlets will be banned next?
I'm really interested to hear what this thing is.
First Snow In The Albuquerque Area
I actually saw snow this evening at my house, though it could barely be called snow. None the less I am calling it snow. It was very very light, but they were flakes. It just left the cement a little wet. It was pretty darned cold out, about 20 degrees less than the normals for this time of year. So much for global warming.
I chose to contribute to the green house effect by running a fire in the fireplace for most of the evening.
Local News Report On Hot Air Balloon Crashes In Rio Rancho
Check out this local news report of a balloon crash in Rio Rancho with some pretty graphic video. This balloon was taking part in the Balloon Fiesta this week. Overall, I believe the safety record of the Balloon Fiesta is pretty good but these crashes highlight just how little control the balloon pilots have compared to a plane.
Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta 2007 Photos
I took a early morning trip to the Balloon Fiasco as we often call it. I would have probably had four times as photos if I didn't run out of battery power. You can view the flickr set or watch the slide show below.
Bomb Threats In Albuquerque
There's been quite a few bomb threats around town lately.
- 08/31/07 - I believe there have been several of these bank related bomb threats.
Police are searching for a white male, about 6-foot-2, 180 pounds, who touched off the bomb scare shortly after 4 p.m. The suspect walked into a doctor's office on Juan Tabo, strapped "suspicious devices" onto a doctor and the doctor's assistant, then marched the two into the bank, Albuquerque police spokeswoman Trish Hoffman said.
- 09/07/07 - Rio Rancho High School.
Rio Rancho Department of Public Safety Spokesman John Francis said the bomb threat was called in to Rio Rancho’s 911 emergency line at about 7:40 a.m.
- 09/09/07 -
A bomb threat called into the Sandia Peak tram closed business for about an hour on Saturday as authorities searched the restaurant located at the bottom of the mountain for explosives. After an investigation of the building, no explosives were found. However, authorities now have the phone number used to make the bomb threat because the Tram had caller ID.
Crime Down 30% In Sandoval County
Good news if you live in Sandoval County, crime is down 30% according to KOB TV. Sandoval county is where Rio Rancho resides. Albuquerque resides in Bernalillo County. In a unrelated note, the Town of Bernalillo is also in Sandoval county.
Speaking of crime, areaconnect.com has a nifty city crime rate comparison tool. Holy crap if Albuquerque doesn't have a severely high crime rate. It's not just higher than Rio Rancho but higher than just about every city I compare it to.

Albuquerque School Police Don't Get Guns, All Get Sick From Holding Breath
The APS Police (they call them police not security?) had a sick out today because they APS policy committee recommended that they not get to carry around guns. So, they all felt that Albuquerque school children would be much safer if the people who are suppose to protect them were all home sick, or if they had guns.
nice
Update: Here's a post on Duke City Fix from Johnny Mango on this subject.
New Mexico Produced Rain Barrells On Today Show
Lisa Ayres, founder of Arid Solutions Inc., has been asked by Joe Lamp'l, host of "Fresh From the Garden" on the DIY Network to send some of her rain barrels to the set of the weekend edition of the Today Show for a segment he is doing on eco-friendly gardening. The segment is slated to run nationally on July 8. Programming information for the local NBC television affiliate, KOB-TV, Channel 4, indicates the broadcast of the Today Show in KOB's New Mexico markets might be pre-empted by coverage of the Wimbledon tennis tournament.
iPhones Still Available At Albuquerque Uptown

According to Apple's iPhone availability checker, they are still available at the Apple Store at Albuquerque Uptown. I'm still waiting for iPhone 2.0 but it's sooooooo tempting after reading the reviews.
Albuquerqe In The Top 10 For Speed Traps
It also says something about my driving record as I've never had a speeding ticket in the 10 years I've lived here. Doesn't mean I haven't been lucky. I've been pulled over twice for not stopping at a stop sign. When I first moved here I had long hair and was driving around in the Maverick. I was pulled over by a cop that was two cars ahead of me for not wearing my seat belt. The Maverick only had lap belts and how could he see when he was two cars ahead of me? I never got a ticket for any of these incidences. I did have two speeding tickets when I lived in Arizona.
Albuquerque Wants Free WiFi Citywide
The Mayor of Albuquerque wants free WiFi for everyone in the city.
a two-tiered wireless Internet signal covering the entire city that will support not just the basics of Web surfing, e-mail and the like, but phone service and video. Those two tiers are a free, 1 megabit signal for anyone and a premium service at 3 Mb for a "reasonable" cost.
Of course Comcast and Qwest don't like it. I say screw 'em. Qwest especially doesn't seem interested in offering extra services and Comcast would probably force everyone to pay $10/month for cable before you can use it. It's the technical issues and money that will keep this from happening.
One wireless provider estimates it would cost $25 million and would require a access point on every building in the city, I think that's overblown. They cite the problems that Rio Rancho has had completing it's network. I thought Rio Rancho had completed it's network.
I hope they try it anyways. I could use some free wifi when I have to drive into Albuquerque
Third Bear Captured In Albuqerque Metro Area
New Mexico game officials have snagged another bear in the Albuquerque metro area – the third in eight days.Residents of the Southeast Heights reported seeing a black bear at about 1:30 a.m. near a mobile home park in the area of Central and Juan Tabo.Third bear captured in metro area - kob.com
New Mexcio Real Estate Roller Coaster Ride
The declines were greatest in the cities of Albuquerque and Rio Rancho. In the Duke City, 223 permits were issued in March compared with 524 in March 2006. For Rio Rancho, just 124 permits were obtained this March compared to 336 a year ago.
New home permits plunge by more than 50 percent - New Mexico Business Weekly.
Housing Sales Fall
Monthly home re-sales continue to slip - New Mexico Business Weekly
The 14 percent, representing the sale of 741 homes last month vs. 861 homes sold during the same month last year, is for detached, single family homes and is a continuing trend that dates to mid-2006. With fewer buyers in the market, the average days on the market has gone from 72 days in February of 2006 to an average of 82 days this February. Month-to-month, there was a 3 percent decline in the number of new listings for sale, a dip from 1,952 in January 2007 to 1,897 in February.
There are three houses for sale on my street, they have sat there for a few months. Glad I'm not selling, wish I had some money to buy.
USDTV Goes Out Of Business
USDTV was a service that gave out a set top box and sent cable channels over the air, using digital TV signals. Albuquerque was one of the few cities to have this service. They have announced the service is dead.
An Open Letter from USDTV
Dear USDTV Customers, Colleagues and Friends;
We are deeply saddened to inform you that we are ceasing operations and closing down the USDTV service. We are doing this after nearly four years of pioneering efforts to bring you a low-cost family friendly alternative to cable TV.
The closure is due to a funding withdrawal from our major investor, who has experienced a financial setback in another business.
We are giving you the option of keeping or returning your USDTV receiver.
We have made arrangements with a third party installation company to convert the USDTV set-top box so as to continue receiving free over-the-air local digital and high definition TV channels without the USDTV cable service.
For more information on the set-top box conversion or other items please visit: www.usdtv.com/customer_service/stb.html.
We have made arrangements with other TV service providers to provide you with a special offer if you choose to subscribe to another service. Go to: Special TV Service Offer for more details.
If you have any questions please email us at: customerservice@usdtv.com
We want to thank you for your loyalty and apologize for any inconvenience this closure may cause you or your family.
We also express appreciation to our colleagues and friends for their support and belief in us. They’ve helped our Utah-based team accomplish many historic firsts in the broadcasting industry. As a result thousands of you have enjoyed and benefited from the savings and family friendly programming USDTV provided.
Our passion was to help families save money on their cable TV bills and provide a service that had a higher quality of cable networks. We were and still are concerned about the increased availability of extremely violent and pornographic content now available on cable & satellite services.
Again, we thank you for your support and belief in us.
Sincerely,
The USDTV Management Team
Breaking News Abuse
It's been windy as heck yesterday and today, which helped to make for some spectacular fires in the bosqe near Belen. Of course there's evacuation, peoples property or worse is effected. I expect the news stations to report on it, but there a point where they go too far. Here's my list of why it gets too annoying.
- The overlay banner at the bottom of the screen causes the High Def programming to switch to standard definition.
- The overlay banner at the bottom of the screen stays on constantly for what seems like hours. They need to just have it on for a minute then turn it off.
- The overlay banner reports the same information over and over, with little or no change. Again, turn it off for a while if there's nothing new.
- The overlay banner tells me over and over how I can turn into the news station at the next normal broadcast time to learn more. Well no fucking shit sherlock, did I think you were going to forget about it? Lets call this what it is, a attempt to advertise your own ego inflated new show.
- The current show is interrupted with a news person to tell us what the banner has been saying, and the banner is still running.
- The current show is interrupted at the very end, just before the news broadcast, for breaking news and the ending of the current show is never shown. Since we couldn't wait 2 minutes for the local news.
At this point I'm already annoyed with this channel for ruining the HD show I was watching and have switched to another channel or started watching something on the DVR. When it comes time watch the local news, I won't be watching your dam channel.
Albuquerques Most Exclusive Restaurant Closes
With a name like "Petroleum Club", you know that not even I can be white enough to get in. It's also, apparently, a dinosaur. This 15th floor restaurant/club closed up shop after about 60 years of exclusivity.
The membership-only club closed Saturday night, but had been having difficulties for several years. Located on the 15th floor at 500 Marquette NW, the restaurant hosted thousands of business luncheons and banquets during its long run. The closure was not expected and the decision to close was made by the club's board of directors.
The club could accommodate 150 diners at any one time, but Downtown's thinning corporate base might have led to its decline. The club underwent a $175,000 renovation in 2004 when it renewed its lease for eight years, but it might not have been enough to stave off declining attendance.
Their dress code
Corporate business dress is always acceptable at lunch and dinner, Shirts without collar for men, jeans, shorts and sportswear are not allowed in the Dining Room at either lunch or dinner.
Their menu isn't cheap but not quite as bad as I would have expected. They do require a automatic 20% tip.
Grilled Atlantic Salmon with roasted garlic horseradish mashed potatoes and lemon butter sauce: Twenty Dollars
Market Salad with cucumbers, alfalfa sprouts, and tomatoes with choice of dressing: Four Dollars
ABQ Uptown Doing Well
A article notes that the stores in ABQ Uptown are doing extremely well, some of the top sellers in the nation. ABQ Uptown is the fancy-pants outdoor mall which has fancy-pants upscale stores. You know it's fancy-pants because it's got an Apple Store, which only builds in fancy-pants malls.
Speaking of the Apple Store they mention that they did $38,000 in sales in the first hours. I don't know if that's good for a Apple Store but it's sure a lot of computers. I couldn't be there for it's first hour, which really sucks, but others did and it was a typical opening with people lining up around the corner.
What Happnened To Jessica Kartalija
Jessica was the local, hot, news reporter on channel 2 and channel 4 here in Albuquerque. She's in Baltimore now. Looks like she's going to be in the transformer's movie too!
Jessica Kartalija joined the WJZ 13 Eyewitness News team during the summer of 2006 as general assignment reporter, and weekend morning news anchor with Tim Williams.
AOL Closes New Mexico Offices
This shouldn't have really been a surprise after AOL said they are going to a free service model.
AOL announced Wednesday it will lay off 1,300 employees by closing call centers in New Mexico and Arizona as part of a previously announced restructuring plan. AOL, the Time Warner Inc. online unit formerly known as America Online, also plans to sell its call center in Ogden, Utah. The cuts include 900 layoffs at the Albuquerque call center and 400 jobs at the center in Tucson, Ariz., AOL spokesman Nicholas Graham said. The Arizona and New Mexico call centers each have operated for 10 years.
Albuquerque Apple Store Revealed!
Do I file this under "Apple Computer" or "Albuquerque"? Whatever. It's coming, the Albuquerque Apple Store is coming! Cult Of Mac has revealed it's exact location in the Uptown Albuquerue shopping center next to the withering Winrock.
Like a true Mac nerd, I plan to be there for it's opening.
Own Part Of The Hilton Hotel On Route 66
The Albuquerque Hilton (La Posada de Albuquerque) Hotel's reception desk is on Craigslist for the bargain price of $5000. I don't know that it's considered vintage, be built in the 1980's. Being huge and being built out of oak, I'd like to have it if I had the money and place for it. Deserving Of 19
Check out Gawkers response to the fact that New York is 19 and Albuquerque is 20.
We eat pieces of shit like you for breakfast, Albuquerque. Fucking retards.
KRQE 5.1 Audio
Having spent a lot of time and money on home entertainment equipment and set up, I've been pretty bummed that the local CBS station (KRQE) doesn't seem to broadcast in 5.1 audio, just stereo.
Greg, It is not you, Currently we do not broadcasting in 5.1 audio. We do have improvement plans in place that will include the purchase of equipment to allow us to broadcast in 5.1. Look for this shortly after the first of the year.

Eclipse Gets FAA Approval
Eclipse Aviation Corp., the Albuquerque manufacturer of the Eclipse 500 very light jet (VLJ), received provisional certification from the Federal Aviation Administration today. The company expects to receive full certification by Aug. 30. That will enable it to start delivering its Eclipse 500s to customers.
This is good news for the job market here as Eclipse will be hiring more. It looks like Honda may be a competitor, as they are coming out with their own small jet. It's not clear if it's a VLJ class plane however.
Heat Wave
Temperatures soared into the upper 90s and higher Sunday from coast to coast, bringing out heat warnings, wilting athletes and driving others into the shade. The choking heat was expected to continue for the next few days, and the hot air was moving toward the East Coast, meteorologists said.
The heat in Albuquerque is nothing compared to Phoenix, as I always say. The humidity was still kinda high today making the swamp cooler not so effective. It still cools down pretty good during the night, however.
Free WiFi For All
In the past week I've been to the Albuquerque SunPort, the Boise Airport, McCarren International Airport in Las Vegas and Sky Harbor in Phoneix. All have had Free WiFi. I'd like to salute you in those airports that made the decision to have free wireless. You make my time in these airports much better than would I had to pay for it (nothing worse than having to pay for it, and yes I'm talking about WiFi). In fact I'm writing this from McCarren now.
Phoenix is the only place I had problems with signal quality. I'm not complaning, I'm just saying.
Albuquerques Phallic Logo Entry
I submit the following logo for a Phallic Logo Award. This was taken out on the west side of Albuquerque. Double bonus for not spelling built correctly.
Base Closures
However the state of New Mexico was not spared, Clovis Air Force Base (Google search)is on the list to be closed. I suspect that this will wipe out Clovis, there's not much else there. But I find statements by our elected representative funny:
Rep. Tom Udall, D-N.M., whose district includes Cannon, called the announcement "wrong-headed."
"It would be an understatement to say that we are all surprised by the Pentagon's decision," Udall said.
Dude, they said they were going to close bases. Why would you be surprised that your base was picked over anyone else's? I'm not saying they shouldn't be upset or fight the closing, but its the supid the way such congress persons make statements of amazement and shock.
Freak Snow Storm

"They" say there will about 30% more moisture than usual this summer. Most people seem to be complaining about the lack of sun, I however am quite content with this one year of rain considering we've been in a drought for about 5 years.
What's That White Stuff?
Would I Fail This 4th Grade Test
- You go to a party. There are 3 drinks, 2 sandwiches, and 4 kinds of candy. How many combinations of all three are possible?
- You have the sides of a rectangular prism flattened out. How many faces and how many total cubic inches are there?
- You have a carpet and a runner of certain dimensions. Is the rug 3 square feet more than the runner?
These test questions or for 4th graders, do they seem like they might be over their heads? I'm not qualified to say what's good for a 4th grader and what's not but this seems like they are bit complicated. I even had a hard time understanding exactly what the questions are asking on the first few read through.
Albuquerque schools are in a dismal state. I;m glad to see the school district trying to improve things but this might be a bit more than the kids are ready for right now.
Click through to see if I answered them correctly.
Let's see if I answered these questions correctly?
- 3x2x4 = 24
- This question was confusing to me. But it says a flattened rectangular prism. So at one point it was 3 dimensional which mean it has 6 faces. But since it's flattened out it has no cu inches, otherwise they would have to give some size information.
- I have no freaking idea.
2005 SuperNationals
169 photos from the 2005 Supernationals taken on 1/30/2005. I'm getting better with the camera, increased the exposure a bit too much so some of these are a little blurry. Overall I feel they came out better than the photos I took at the 2004 Supernationals. These photos are available at flickr (2005 Supernationals set) or watch the slideshow below.

Wet Weather Expected. Also Sky is Blue, Earth is Round
The forecast calls for more rain this week. 2004 was one of the top ten wettest years since they started making records of such things. Just based on the first 2 months, 2005 could become the wettest!
Seen here, the snowy Sandia Mountains at sunset.
Weekend Plans
It's been a few (war) weeks but we finally got some more moisture. It's been rainny but not cold enough for snow. Bummer. RIght now Sandia Peak has 11 inches in the last 24 hours and Santa Fe has 9 inches.
You can guess where I'll be this weekend, yes skiing in Santa Fe. My Millennium pass gets me free skiing during the month of January in Santa Fe, however the 2005 Supernationals are this weekend. Hmmm...
So I think I will go Skiing on Saturday, go to the Supernationals on Sunday then take Monday off and Ski. Plus I have some homework to catch up on that I can work on Sunday as well.
Local Dumbass Gets Arrested
Thankfully these kinds of dumb-asses make law enforcements jobs easier.
Police arrest a man who threatened a Hooters manager and you won't believe how police caught up with him. Police says 23-year old Gregory Lock, along with three other people, refused to pay their bill at the Hooters on San Mateo. Police say when the manager told Lock and his friends they couldn't come back, Lock grabbed his gun and waved it at the manager, then took off. The very next call, APD responded to was a domestic disturbance at an apartment complex on Pan American Northeast. The same officer who was called to Hooters responded and ran into Lock. When Lock saw the officer, he ran up to him and said, "I didn't have anything to do with that bill skip at hooters". Lock is charged with aggravated assault.
Albuquerque in the New York Times

All the years I've lived here I haven't rode on the Tram up to the Sandia's. However I have eaten at "High Finance" at the top. Not sure where the name came from but I recall it was appropriate for the price of the food. I've also been to Sadies several times, however I think El Pinto is better. The Frontier Restaurant on Central (Route 66, across from the University) is a required place to visit. But the restaurant illustrates how it's possible to have too many choices. The Flying Star Cafe is an equally excellent choice, especially since there provide free WiFi (same goes for their coffee shops, The Satellite).
There's several other places mentioned in the article but I haven't been to to them.
ABQ Website 10 Years Old
On this day, the City of Albuquerque was one of the first governments in the state of New Mexico to "give birth" to a website. In fact, based upon our research, Albuquerque's website appears to be the 3rd oldest municipal website in the country, just behind the City of Palo Alto, CA (Feb 1994) and the City of San Carlos, CA (May 1994).
The city has a very useful website. I've used it on multiple occasions to look up city services and almost always found what I was looking for.
Red Light Cameras

Apparently the Police never actually drive on the roads, because I'm not at all surprised. I would even say that running red lights is the biggest traffic issue in Albuquerque. Probably the worst variation are those that run the left turn arrow.
I for one welcome our red light camera overloads to Albuquerque. I would hope that the next one goes at Coors & Montano Rd, which is the second most dangerous intersection in the state.
Finally, Some Snow!

The forcast for tomorrow is cold and sunny which means melting snow turning to ice.
[Updated:] Well it's turned out to be kind of anti-climatic. About 10am it was snowing hard. The roads were covered in it. Then came news that several roads were closed and the hill up to Rio Rancho had 7 accidents on it, it was closed as well.
About 12:30 I decided to leave work, everyone else had. The snow had pretty much stopped. The roads were clear and a good bit of the snow had melted. It's still pretty cold under 30 degrees.
Still more snow is expected.

Follow Up to Dog Attack
A police report concerning the dog that apparently bit off a man's genitals says that the man may have been using force against the animal. Rudolfo Ramirez, 25, might have been trying to forcibly open the pit bull's mouth. The report also said Ramirez was wandering the neighborhood in only in boxer shorts. ... "As soon as he hit the dog, the dog yelped and the guy got up," Chacon remembers. "He was still alive but his inner thighs, genitalia, and lower stomach was all ripped away." ... The dog at the focus of the story remains at an animal shelter, as the search for its owner continues.
There was a point in which we thought the guy was sexually assaulting the dog.
Dog Eats Man's "Twigs & Berries"
Albuquerque police say the unidentified man was walking the dog when it attacked him. Police say the man was seriously injured in the groin area.
Susie Rayos Marmon Elementary School, where this happened, is about 1000 feet from my house. Apparently the dog took the mans parts with him. I also heard that the guy was drunk but it's just hearsay at this point. As far as I know they haven't found the dog. I will be wearing a cup prior to leaving the house today.
[Update 8/31/04] It's gets stranger. According to the news tonight (in which they showed our house for 2 seconds) the man was found naked and the dog was "abused". The dog is still at large.

Albuquerque Escargot
That's OK, I don't think I will be eating them from the yard or in the restaurant.
UFO silliness indeed

They have a great explantion of what they saw, "One might be led to believe that I actually saw a UFO that is an extra-terrestrial vehicle that was large but far away. The fact is that I saw it at a crowded sitr and in a crowded sky. The photo was taken during a hot air balloon mass ascension and a balloon flew behind this curious object after I had taken the photo. Thus I was able to determine the object was no more than a few feet in diameter. My guess (and it is only a guess) is that it was some sort of mylar balloon reflecting the sunlight and caught in the wind, even though it appeared to be stationary and rotating from my vantage point. Or who knows....Maybe they are just really small aliens attending the balloon fiesta like I was!" It's good to see an actual explanation and not instantly assuming it's a spaceship. As much as I would like to believe, the truth is really out there. I'm almost sure it's always man made.
Oopsy
Nice job. The state is in a DWI big crackdown this weekend with checkpoints everywhere.
Waterlogged

Generally New Mexico gets about 8 inches of rain a year. This last storm brought 2.5 to 3.5 inches depending on where you are. Carlsbad got nearly 6.
This is why I suggest a national pipeline. Not to pump oil but to pump water. There would be a network of big pipes located throughout the country. Through these pipes we could pump water from where ever there are rivers and lakes and people living near by. If these waterways flood then we could pump the water to where it's needed. For example the flooded Pecos river in Carlsbad could have had it's water pumped to Elephant Butte lake where it's extremely low. If it floods in the mississippi river valley they and there's a drought in the southwest the excess water could be pumped where it's needed.
It's been done with the CAP (Central Arizona Project) where they bring water from the Colorado River to the Phoenix area.
Way To Go Sunport!
We Got Snow
Boy did we ever. At my house we got about an inch. Which isn't much but that translates to 36 inches on top of the Sandia Mountains. Which still isn't a lot compared to some parts of the US but it is an lot for Albuquerque. It's been almost 2 days since the storm hit and we are still having fog and parts of the east mountains are just now getting their power back on. They even had to close I-40 from Albuquerque to Texas. The Sandia Peak ski area is now 100% open, the first time in 3 years and last year they didn't open at all.
Were expecting another storm in a day or two. Hopefully it brings just as much snow because we can desperately use the water.

36 Arrests
I recall several years ago driving home from work. It was beginning to get dark. In the lane lane opposite to me I observed a man in a Chevy Dually pickup drive his truck off to the side of the road. He was going pretty fast and it bounced as it came to a stop. He got out and walked into the middle of the road, the "no mans land" in the middle in between the orange stripes, and proceeded to take a wiz. I'm pretty sure he was drunk. Scarry stuff. Anytime I see someone driving irratic I have to wonder if they are drunk.

Some Is Better Then None

I love the snow. Growing up in Arizona I didn't get to live in snow let alone see much of it. Therefore I get really excited where there's a chance for snow
My first day in Albuquerque it snowed. I woke up that morning for my first day of work. Outside there find probably 6-12" of snow on the ground. I didn't even know it snowed overnight and the day before there was no sign of snow. I remember that it was very quite. Not only because it was 5am but because there is something about the sound deadening quality of a think layer of snow, it's very peaceful.
It was quite an adventure trying to drive a '72 Ford Maverick equipped to dissipate heat as quick as possible in the 100+ degree Arizona weather. It worked well in Arizona but with the cold weather of that morning I couldn't keep it running. It wouldn't warm up even when I covered the radiator. I had to ditch the car on a side street, walk back to my apartment and call my cousin to pick me up.
Today we just got a dusting of snow. It hasn't snowed that good in a few years at least. I still enjoy it. Looks like there will be another chance on Monday for more snow and I look forward to it.
FInally!
Snow?
[Update:] I think I saw snow for a minute. Other than that all we got was rain in Albuquerque. Plenty of snow in the Sandias and Santa Fe though. We really needed the moisture otherwise so I'm not complaining.
