Rapid Weaver Continues To Piss... Me.. Off...
Rapid Weaver 3.6 has some great features. Enough to make me switch. I soon found out it had so bugs, specifically it would publish the enitre site instead of just the changes, even when I select "publish changes." 3.6.1 & 3.6.2 were suppose to address this, I think. For me no dice. 3.6.2 was worse, it would crash while trying to publish anything.
Rapid Weaver 3.6.3 Beta seemed to finally fix both of these issues. I used it for a while and now it started crashing again. What the hell
I submitted bug reports and I hope they help, but I've had to switch back to 3.6.0.
Grrrrrrr...
For The H*ll Of It Is Now Greg In The Desert
I have a actual domain name for the site now, http://www.greginthedesert.net. For The H*ll Of It was never meant to be the permanant name of the site, but I wanted to wait till I had a domain name before I changed it. I think this one is a little more personal. It's taken a longer than I expected, but thanks to .mac now having domain name support I'm able to do this.
If your reading this via the RSS feed, you shouldn't need to do anything. The site is in a new directory now so I will have to generate redirect pages in the old location.

Good To Be Back Home
Haven't been in the blogging mode the last several weeks. My company sent me to Arizona for an assignment, which pretty much sucked
Normally I would have jumped at a chance to go to Arizona for free. But its hot and miserable in Arizona this time of year. Then I caught a cold and was sick for the first two weeks. How does someone catch a cold in 100+ heat? Someone broke into my rental car. Thankfully it wasn't my own car and I didn't leave anything in the car. It was still a hassle and lost most of a day dealing with it
Anyway it's good to be back home.
Export Blosxom Entries To Rapid Weaver
I've been able to get my Blosxom entries imported into Rapid weaver using a combination of templates and Applescript. There are several ways this could be done, I choose to use a
set of Blosxom templates by Marc Nozell. I set Blosxom to generate 9999 entires and set my browser to http://localhost/cgi-bin/blosxom.cgi?flav=mt (.mt being the template extension). I then saved the resulting webpage to my hard drive as a text file.Ah, but winning is only half the battle. Or something like that. Rapid Weaver will import the file, but the format of the file isn't quite right to get the proper import.
- Rapid Weaver will only import dates that are in AM/PM format, it doesn't like 24 hour format that templates default format is in. I should note that the
To fix this issues I post process the MTI file with Applescript. The Applescript formats the date, parses out categories and removes line breaks from entries. There is only one problem with this script, it is extremely slow. It took over 3 hours for it to process my 1000 entry, 2 MB file. If this was something I used a lot, I might try to speed it up. One way to speed it up is to save it as a Run Only application.
Download
Fix MTI from Blosxom.scptThis Applescript could be used on any MTI file. It will need to have the parts removed that are not needed. Hopefully it's obvious from the code what does what.
Rapid Weaver 3.6 Is Released And I'm Switching
Rapid Weaver 3.6 was released today with some significant improvements. One of which is multiple categories in the blogging module. I won't go into the whole list here so check out the MacUpdate page.
I've been watching the development of RW for a while and I think it's good enough to use as my Blogging platform. Unfortunately there's no way for me to import the 1300+ entries I had my Blosxom blog. It's also missing a few other things that Blosxom can do, but does a lot of things it can't.
A link to the old site is here until I can figure out a way to import the entires. The RSS feed should remain the same.
New RSS Feed
The new RSS feed for For The H*ll Of It is http://feeds.feedburner.com/fthoi. The old one will still be there for a little while longer, but feedburner keeps it from being all screwed up (plus I can track usage).
Update: Looks like feedburner has brought up a few posts from the past (2003) and stuck them in the year 2007. I went in and cleaned up some older posts and for some reason these floated to the top. Looks like some more work needs to be done.
I'm Not Dead
Some one searched for "Rocky Mountian News article on the death and funeral of Greg Smith" on Google and found my site. Yikes!
Bloxsom Site Is Back
I finally figured out what was wrong with Bloxsom's static rendering not rendering. Turns out it was working right all the time. I have the cgi set to do static rendering to /Volumes/gregjsmith/Sites, which is the direct path to my iDisk. For some reason MacOS decided to name my iDisk gregjsmith-1 and created a local path for /Volumes/gregjsmith/Sites.
In other words, it works now. Obviously because your reading this. iWeb was annoying due to the lack of built in HTML editing. I realize that they are making it as easy as possible but some HTML editing is needed.
del.icio.us links
I've finally got around to getting the right side links working again. Rather than manully manage my list of links. I'm using a javascript to get links that I've added via del.icio.us. This means it's easy for me to add new links to my sidebar without having to do anything to my site.
To post stuff to del.icio.us I'm using the Lazy Sheep bookmarklet which auto tags links based on what others have tagged it. Plus it works right in my browser.
Back To The Blog
After posting my review of iWeb I discovered that it totally screwed up my link to my blog. Specifically a link to http://homepage.mac.com/gregjsmith caused a 404 page, where as http://homepage.mac.com/gregjsmith.index.html still works. This was annoying enough that I just didn't want to deal with it.
I was finally able to fix this by going into the .mac homepage settings, deleting all my pages listed there and create a new one. That reset my index.html page. I then republished my index.html page and now I'm back and working.
I Am A Bad Bad Blogger
It is said that to have a popular blog one must post compelling content. Which means one must at least post. It's no wonder then that I don't have a popular blog because I haven't even bothered to post. Lets see if I can put a end to that.
So, what have I been up to?
I have been posting to Flickr quite a bit. You can check out a few of my sets from my trip to Tennessee.
Unfortunately iPhoto has crapped out on me, showing me only blank images for the 7000+ i've stored with it. Until I get that fixed no more will be uploaded.
Yes, I made a trip to Tennessee to visit family, I had not been back there in about 20 years. We also went to Savanna Georgia during the off season, which was very interesting. More about that to come late.
I plan to spend this winter working on the house and skiing with some other misc travel in between. As the house moves along I will be posting pictures. In fact I was thinking of starting a home improvement video blog dedicated to the house renovations, since I have quite a bit planned. What do you think?
I'll try to keep up the posting, I really don't have any excuse not to post.

It has cost millions of dollars, hundreds have died, but the site layout is pretty close to where I want it. I thought the old layout had too much grey in it, so I took some cues from Mail.app to put some color in the side bars.
The brushed metal is totally me, so it stays. But I felt the title bar could be more compact so I pushed the flickr badge to the top. I think the look is good and should fit well at 1024 width. For those with lower resolutions, well I suspect it won't display right anyways.
There's some more tweaking to do and if I don't wipe out the CSS again, it shouldn't be much work. If your using a browser other than Safari, let me know how it loosk.
Welcome To FTHOI 2.0
Welcome to For The H*ll Of It 2.0, now powered by Blosxom. I'm not here to bash iBlog, my previous blogging app, it's been a good system and I paid the full shareware fee for it. But I've been disappointed with the slow pace of development and lack of fixes for even the smallest bugs. After studying different system, weighing the pros and cons, I decided to abandon iBlog for a more customizable solution. Blosxom also gives me some features that I really like.
Blosxom has no database to keep track of entries. The file system is the database, so to speak. Entries get filed as text files and saved in folders. Blosxom then generates the site categories based on the folder structures, this means subcategories are easy to make. It's easy to manage this way and there's no secret to where your entries are. It's also very easy to move to another computer if necessary.
Running Blosxom on my local computer is easy. Once I have the single perl script installed in my webserver directory on my local computer (and have personal web serving turned on) I simply access it via this URL: http://localhost/cgi-bin/blosxom.cgi. .mac doesn't allow the use of cgi scripts, this is where the killer feature of Blosxom comes in; it can generate static web pages. By using a proper command in the terminal, I can tell Blosxom to make a static version of the site where ever I want, in this case I have it generate the site on my iDisk.
I will be importing my iBlog entries over and writing more about this and how I did it in the coming weeks. Until then they are still in their old directory structure. (you can fine the old home page here)
Update 05/17/05 8:05PM: Still playing around with Blosxom/MarsEdit and how it saves entries. This one may move around as I figure out how date/time stamps work.Slow Around Here
Screw You Commission Junction
I've been using Commissio Junction for over a year now to serve ads. For those that think I may be getting rich off them, think again. I made a total of $5.26 from their banner adds. In order for them to give me money, someone has to buy something from the link, clicking isn't good enough.
I have to say that CJ has some pretty nice features. Specifically their "smartzones", which allows you to set up rotating ads and set a weight to each one to control how often they appear. Their website is very professionally designed and they have an excellent reporting system.
This week when I logged in I got the following message:
Our records indicate that your account has been deactivated.
Whaaaaa? I checked my email and didn't see anything from them that said they would be deactivating my account. Searching their site, the only way I could find to get support was to log on. No emails except one, to pr@cj.com. So I used that email to find out what happened. That was sent to their support system and I received a email:
Yes, you were deactivated due to our dormancy policy. If there are no transactions over a 6 month period and your balance is zero, we deactivate the account.
Well my balance wasn't zero, it had $5.26 (which I don't think I will ever see) but I didn't have any transactions in 6 months even though I served tens of thousands of ads. Apparently it's policy to deactivate an account without warning (see here and here) and no system in place that lets you protest it, since there is no support email address available (the email that was sent to me came from their support system that has a no-reply email address).
I guess they are going to keep my money, even though I served thousands of ads for their customers. So to Commission Junction I say screw you.
Technorati Tags & iBlog
Technorati has come out with a new feature that allows you to "tag" your entries, then find other entries that are similarity taged and also find photos from Flickr. Really, a tag is a category and guess what, one already categories posts in iBlog so lets incorportate this feature.
You can see on my main blog page I have a "Related" link next to the category page. When you click it, it will take you to the technorati tag page. The code is pretty simple:
< a href="http://technorati.com/tag/<$>" rel="Tag">Related</a> You use this code on both the BlogPage.txt and EntryPage.txt template files. Due to the high level of consistency in iBlog, you will need to use slighlty different code for CategoryPage.txt file:
< a href="http://technorati.com/tag/<$>" rel="Tag">Related</a> note: There's an extra space just before the "a href" that you will need to remove.
I don't know if "Related" is the best way to describe it, it should be easy enough that any vistor should be able to figure out what it means. That may need some work still. But I think it works pretty good.
Well, I Guess I'm Not Good Enough

Rounded Corners
I used this example. I'm not going to test it in every browser so let me know what you think.
[Update:] I should note that I'm only testing it in Safari so if your using anything other than that let me know.
[Update 2:] OK made some more changes. Corners look good in FireFox 1.0 on my machine (not testing IE on Mac). I used PowerPoint to create the corners but had issues with the colors matching when I created the final results using both .jpg and .png files. So far .gif seems to give the best results.
Privacy Policy
I understand the need for privacy in todays online world. Therefore I have written this statement to explain how I use any information collected by this site.
You must first understand that a large percentage of this site is generated by "third parties", that means I allowed other companies or organizations to have content on this site. This includes things like the comments, advertisements and other features. I cannot control how they use your information but I have made every effort to ensure they have reasonable usage of your information and they do not intend to use it for "evil" means, such as selling email addresses to spammers, etc.
As of this posting, this site is hosted by .mac, a service provided by Apple Computers to subscribers of their .mac service. I do not have direct control over the operation of their servers.
I do not collect IP addresses, however they are logged with the "site traffic" monitors that I subscribe to. I can look at this information and see what the IP address is but I do not keep it for any reason. Generally this information is used in aggregate to see the type of browser you are using, time, date and pages viewed during your visit. If you send me a email
it becomes my property to do with as I please. In nearly every circumstance I will not do anything nefarious with your email, however I may repost it on my site if I find a good reason. If you send me spam, especially items that fit in with the 411 scam messages you can bet I will post that. If you send me something funny or interesting I may post it but remove your email.
I usually keep a large list of links I find interesting. I cannot control what happens when you leave this site, they may have their own privicy policies and may even do "evil" things with your data, though I would usally never link to them if I thought that and not include a disclaimer.
Cookies should not be required to view this site in the most basic way, however some things may not work without them.

Dear .Mac member,
You recently received an email that stated an incorrect storage increase amount for your .Mac account. The correct information is as follows:
Every full .Mac membership now comes with 250 MB of combined .Mac Mail and iDisk storage. Because we appreciate your past purchase of additional storage, we have increased your total storage to 1 GB for the duration of your current membership.
We regret any confusion the earlier email may have caused. We value your membership and hope you enjoy this enhancement to your .Mac service.

familysafeweb.net now links to you
I've received a few of these emails, people inviting me to link to them because they linked to me. Them being businesses who are looking for google page rank increases (I've had very little, and I mean little popularity), I guess I show at the top of a few google searches.
I checked out their site and didn't see my site in the links sections anywhere. I did learn that this Christian ISP blocks sites and seems to be quite proud of it. I do not agree with the concept of ISP blocking and for that reason I cannot return the link (note I didn't actually include any links in the message). Not to mention that they refer to my site as forthehellofit when my site is For The H*ll Of it. What's ironic is that the word hell might actually be filtered by them or the very concept of the word "hell" my be offensive to their clientele.

Color Changes
[Update:] As it turns out there's not a whole lot of colors that go with grey, except maybe blue. I'm also trying to determine the best way to add rounded corners. This certainly matches my preferred "industrial" style but it's still not quite right. Too dark me thinks.
Hit Me! Hit Me!
It will probably be the most traffic I will ever see. Unfortunately I've been too busy with work to post much else to really take advantage of it.

A Little More...
On the other hand if you surf to a particular section and find it doesn't work right then that could be my fault. Let me know if you get a problem and where it is so I can check it out.
Site Updates
Things were getting out of control with a miscellaneous folder I was throwing photos in. iBlog wasn't able to control the placement of photos in the entries as it is now so to get around that I was using HTML code. I went through and removed the HTML and put the photos into the entries. A major pain to go through some 300 entries to check them all.
Next I changed the basic layout of the site. The Abstract now only shows on the main and category pages with the Body only showing on the main entry page. This allows me to make a quick intro to the entry, as I think it was intended. Again I had to through each entry and make sure it had the body set up correctly.
I went through and made some tweaks to the template. Check out the menu bar at the top and the "quick links" on a entry page. I think it works out pretty good.
I cleaned up the photo album entries. Your mother always told you that tables are for tabular data, not layouts. So i removed the table structure of the albums and made them pure CSS. The advantage of the CSS layout is that it will auto adjust the columns so they don't overlap. Check out a album and resize the browser window to see what I mean.
And finally I added a whole bunch of stuff as blog entries (check out the photo section) that have been floating around my .mac account without a real way to get to them. I still got a few things to add but I think the majority of it's there now.
Google's Wonderfull Algorithm
Don't ask me how or why it works like it does. But A post I made just about 1 days ago already shows as the first result on Google. Doing a Google search for Election Postponement shows my post as the very first result. Oh if only all those post spammer had whatever magic my site has.The funny thing is there are probably on a dozen, if that, people linking to me. It's not the first time it's happened either, as many other post I've made have shown up as my page first on the list, things that I'm not neccissarily the expert on (like almost everything I post). Oh well, in a few days I expect it will drop in the rankings. For a while I had the top listing for the post I made about the FCCSong, now I show as about the 70th result.
Thanks for the Review
As for the IE thing. I'm not sure what to do. The current version of IE that I have on my PC at works seems to do a pretty decent job except for the javascript errors (which I'm still trying to isolate). I know older versions of IE choke on some of the CSS. Not much I can do about that. It's definitely not an issue where I'm purposly trying to prevent IE users from viewing the page, I just don't know what I need to do to make it work as well as it does on Safari.
The Spam Blog does some good
Where's The Spam?
Links Updated
[Update:] Looks like I left off Neatly Sliced. Since that was clearly fault of someone at FTHOI World Headquarters we have made the the first link.
Safari Bugs
There appears to be a bug in Safari that cause the heading titles of the various entries to position themselves, well, not in the right place. I have found that if I refresh the page they will be where they are suppose to be on the reload. If you see this strange behavior and your running Safari please press the the little bug button and send a bug report to Apple. Be sure to check the "screen capture" option so they can see what the problem is. Camino seems to do really strange things too but just scrolling past and back to the strange rendering will usually fix it.
[Update:] Ah ha, I think I know what's going on. Seems that Safari will sometimes load the page without the images first. Then when it loads the images it adjusts all the elements on the page except for the heading portion. I think that when you reload the page the images are already in the cache so it doesn't have to load them and can render the page appropriately.
Trackback & XML
I also have to thank Ron Bell for noticing the new XML items over at Yahoo. You can subscribe to a XML enabled site and have it show up in your my.yahoo.com page. Plus sites with XML will show up as having it in the search, although mine doesn't show like that now. Yahoo has a lot of cool RSS/XML stuff going on that you should check out.
Thank You Apple :(
[Update:] OK, Camino, Mozilla and Omniweb all have the same behavior. But IE on windows doesn't do it. I'm very perplexed. I also discovered that one of my Ads is producing Pop-unders! Say goodbye to everything except Amazon.com ads.
[Update 2:] May not be Apple's fault completely. I had the "position" of the middle box set for 10 pixels from the bottom. Apparently this means 10 pixels from what ever part of the browser window you can see.
Major Code Update
I've made some major update to the CSS of the site. Cleaning up the HTML and rearranging the CSS positions primarily. You may also note that I am experimenting with a "theme switcher". Have to thank Michelle for the inspiration for that. It's not all set up and working right. So if you try to use it and get unexpected results don't be surprised. I will be fixing it through the weekend. The only way I could test it was by putting it up live on the site.
I've had a website in some form or anther since about 1994. I first signed up on dial up with AMUG. My website located at http://www.amug.org/~a121 (web archive). Oddly enough my redirect page is still there. I learned to code my first page by just getting on the net and looking for help on HTML. Since then I have learned a lot about HTML but many years ago I lost interest. Since that time many new technologies have appeared including CSS in which I have had no idea how to code.
So this is an opportunity to get aquatinted with web design and code again.
More CSS tinkerings
Here is some info on the Overflow Property:
CSS overflow Property
The overflow property is the way I can get the page to scroll. This property has five different styles:
- visible
This is the default, and it indicates that the content should be displayed on the page as the browser normally would. - hidden
This style indicates that any extra content that doesn't fit in the box should remain hidden. - scroll
With the overflow set to scroll will add scrollbars (both vertical and horizontal) to the box property. - inherit
The inherit style sets the overflow to be inherently the same as the parent element. - auto
This is the style we want. It specifies that if the content will overflow the box, scrollbars should display, otherwise, they are left off.
I put the overflow : auto; on both the left navigation element and the main content area. That ensures that if the browser window is really small, both the navigation and the content will be scrollable.
Scrollable seems to be the best solution for now. I'd rather it force the text to wrap but that doesn't seem to be available in CSS at this time. I've included some dummy text at the bottom of this entry to illustrate the scrolling.

Who visits
It's interesting to see what people have been reading on my site. Here is a breakdown:- 48% AWARD WINNING NOTIFICATION!
- 23% Main Page
- 7% Sony iPod Killer
- 5% Unknown
- 3% Another Theming Utility
- 2% MacOS on CF
- 2% Sim City 4
- 10% Others (each 1%)
In the case of the "Another Theming Utility" just about every link comes from a search engine with someone looking for a serial number for ShapeShifter or Fruit Menu. (Shame on them). In the case of "Sim City 4" people are either looking for a serial number or graphics card information.
I am most surprised at how many people are coming here looking for info on the AWED scam. If you do a Google search for this lottery scam my site will for usually come up in the first page (depending on what exactly you searched for and when). Very strange and I hope people leave my site knowing that it's is indeed a scam.

New Site Design
Google has yet to crawl the new site so a lot of links they have are pointing to pages that don't exist since I moved the old site to the /old/ directory. Don't know how to make their robots crawl my site?
I still looking for the perfect link manager. I've tried BlogRolling and are currently using BlogLinker. BlogLinker is pretty good but I don't think it's perfect.
I've also discovered that Internet Exploder on Windows doesn't so such a good job rendering the page. So I though it might be a good idea to put a permanent note on the site so those poor fools will know its not the site but their browsers.
Another First Post!
Yet another name change
I've been trying to find a clever name for my site since I first started the blog. While driving through New Mexico this week I was inspired to call it "Casa Gregorio". Technically the spanish translation for Gregory's Home Page would be "La Página principal de Gregorio" but I though that sounded like too much. Feel free to leave a comment and let me know what you think.
What a Pain!
The software I have been using to create this blog had a brain fart earlier this week. The iBlogData.blog file became corrupted and I essentially lost my blog. I had to copy and paste each entry from what was left on the web site into new entries.
From now I will be making back ups of the ApplicationData to keep this from happening again.
Advertisements
[Updated 3/31/2007] This is my offical advertising polcy. I use advertising from several sources, mostly affiliate programs.
For the affiliate programs, I only advertise from those merchants that I personally have used. Links to those merchants are on the right hand column. I may also put links in my posts to those merchants where they can apply and I may make posts about special deals those merchants might make.
Amazon is one of the affiliate programs I use. They have a context links program which will automatically scan my site and add links to products. These links are differentiated from normal links by being orange. These links do not show up on RSS feeds.
Finally, I used Google Adsense. These links should be clearly marked.
MacHead's Aces High Site
My alter ego in the PC world? [UPDATE 6/18/03] Its not there anymore since I ran out of space. Will bring it back some time in the future.
Yes I am a Mac fanatic. I'm about as fanatical as they get, and for good reason. But we do live in a world with the dark side's looming presents. Thus I have been playing a online game called "Aces High" and there is no Mac version. Check out my page. I've got some videos there that I made with iMovie
First Post!
I've updated my first post to give some more information about me. It's a little difficult to deciced what to tell and what not to tell. Obviously I'm not going to give out my social security number but I'm also not going to tell where I work. Other than to say that I currently work for a large multi-national "hi-tech" comapny (I think they are sensitvie to emplyoees running around saying they are an employee, I don't want to find out the hard way).
Currently I'm in New Mexico but from Arizona. I'm open minded to where I'll be in the future. I'm a geek of the grandest kind. Gadgets are my passion. And if you didn't notice I'm a Mac head. Unfortunately I know way to much about Microsoft operating systems and my job requires it. I hope one day to have a "Mac only" job.
I can a little support the claim that I have been "On the web since 1995". My first ISP was AMUG (Arizona Macintosh Users Group) user a121. That was back in when I lived in Arizona, previous to 1996. I had a web site, www.amug.org/~a121. The site is no longer there but the Wayback Machine has a little bit of the archive. That only starts at 1998 so doesn't completely support my claim. Strangely a google search for my email from amug only results in this post from 7 Sep 1995. Why the heck was I looking for "Russian Obstetric Practices"?
Feel free to email me.
